Hydrogen gas lit from within. Newborn stars blast it with ultraviolet light, and the gas glows back in deep red — nature's own neon sign.

A knot of brilliant, just-born stars at the heart of the cloud. Their fierce radiation powers everything glowing around them.

Dark NebulaBarnard 85

Cold dust so dense it blocks the light behind it. These shadow-lanes carve the cloud into lobes — the three parts that name the Trifid.

Reflection NebulaScattered starlight

No glow of its own — just fine dust scattering a nearby blue star's light, the same way our daytime sky turns blue.

Reading starlight

A star's colour is its temperature. The same physics that makes a poker glow from red to white-hot sorts the stars across this frame: blue suns are scorching, red ones are cool and old.
